The sea urchin Arbacia spatuligera is an echinoid distributed in the Southeastern Pacific Ocean from Peru to Chile. This species was previously reported from the subtidal zone with a bathymetric distribution up to 30 m depth. In this work, 128 individuals were found in four mesophotic reefs along the central coast off Chile using closed-circuit rebreathers in technical diving at higher depths than previously, ranging from 36 to 63 m in depth. A population exhibits unexpected morphological characters, requiring an emended diagnosis and description of a new morphotype for A. spatuligera. These morphological traits are further discussed as potential ecophenotypic adaptations.
First record of the epiphyte sea anemone Bunodeopsis pelagica in the Mexican Atlantic

Bunodeopsis pelagica is one of the few species of sea anemones known to be found in the floating algae of Sargassum spp. It has been reported in the North Atlantic, particularly in the Canary Islands and the coast of Jamaica. The present study is the first to report the occurrence of B. pelagica in the Mexican Atlantic, found as epiphyte on Sargassum natans off Alacranes reef (southern Gulf of Mexico) and in Puerto Morelos reef (Mexican Caribbean), revealing that this species is much more widespread than has been reported. Bunodeopsis pelagica is mainly distinguished from other species of Bunodeopsis by having simple minute protuberances on its column, while its congeners have larger and much more developed vesicular projections. With the record of B. pelagica, the number of known species of actiniarian sea anemones from the Mexican Atlantic increases to 23.

Early Neolithic funerary practices and the meaning of complete ceramic vessels found isolated are poorly researched topics in western Iberia. However, recent archaeological salvage excavations at Armazéns Sommer and Palácio Ludovice in Lisbon have revealed individual burial pits of male individuals laid in a foetal position and directly associated with necked vessels. These discoveries suggest that finds of isolated vessels, known since the beginning of the twentieth century in Portugal and usually found fortuitously apparently without archaeological context, may also have originally belonged to similar burials, unnoticed by their finders. This hypothesis opens new perspectives for the interpretation of such finds, which are inventoried in the present article.
Low salinity negatively affects early larval development of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus: insights from skeletal muscle and molecular biomarkers

The present study evaluated the effects of low salinity on the early larval development of Oreochromis niloticus, specifically histological damage to white muscle, morphology of the yolk-sac surface and trunk area, and molecular expression of apoptosis and cell proliferation biomarkers. Newly hatched larvae were submitted to four salinity treatments for a period of 48 or 72 h, in duplicate: (S0) freshwater, (S2) 2 g l−1, (S4) 4 g l−1, and (S6) 6 g l−1NaCl. Larval development was examined using histology, electron microscopy, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and morphometry. At the yolk-sac surface, larvae of S4 and S6 displayed alterations to the apical opening of chloride cells that may be related to osmotic expenditure caused by the increased salinity. Caspase-3 expression did not differ significantly among treatments, however significantly lower proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression (P < 0.05) suggested minor cell proliferation in larvae of S4 and S6 compared with S0 and S2. Furthermore, there was a significant reduction in both trunk area and percentage of normal white muscle fibres (WF) in larvae of S4 and S6. Vacuolated areas and myofibrils concentrated at the cell periphery and found in the white muscle from larvae exposed to saline environments suggested disturbance to muscle development. Oedema and mononuclear infiltrate were also observed in the white muscle of S4 and S6 larvae. Together these results indicated that treatments with 4 and 6 g l−1 NaCl may cause osmoregulation expenditure, morphological alterations to the yolk-sac surface and histological damage to skeletal muscle that negatively affected the early larval development of O. niloticus.

In this work polypyrrole (PPy) and its respective composite with functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PPy-MWCNT) was obtained by the chemical polymerization of the monomer pyrrole (PPy) in aqueous solution by the dropwise addition of a solution of ammonium persulfate (PSA). The obtained PPy as well as its composite (PPy-MWCNT) were used to prepare two self-assembled films (SA) by the immersion of ITO blades (Inidium Tin Oxide) into PPy and PPy-MWCNT dispersions with alternated immersions into Polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) dispersion, thus resulting in a bilayer. The SA films were produced with ten bilayers (alternated layers of PPy or its composite). The obtained films were characterized by Fourrier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Visible analysis, voltammetric analyses (square wave and cyclic voltammetry) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The SA films were evaluated to determine the chlorothalonil pesticide which is commonly used as anti-fouling agent in marine environments. The SWV results showed a reduction peak at around -0.8 to 1.2 V (according to pH). It was also observed a synergic effect of the composite film (PPy-MWCNT/PSS) to determine the chlorothalonil by increase of the peak currents.

For long decentering has been regarded as a crucial process for well-being and health. Thus, reliable measures are needed to assess decentering. This study aimed at examining the psychometric characteristics of the Portuguese version of the Experiences Questionnaire (EQ), and to contribute to gather new evidence on the role of this particular measure of decentering on the well-known relationship between rumination and depressive symptoms. The EQ factorial structure was assessed through a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) conducted in 709 participants (66% women; 34% men). CFA’ results supported a 10-item solution (χ2/df = 2.62; CFI = .96; TLI = .95; RMSEA = .05, CI = .04 to .06) with high internal consistency (α = .81), test-retest reliability (r = .86; p < .010) and construct validity. Two path analyses were further conducted in a subsample exploring the indirect effect of rumination on depression through the mechanism of decentering as assessed by the specific measure of EQ, and by the non-specific measure of decentering TMS. Decentering, only when measured by EQ, significantly emerged as a mechanism through which the relationship between rumination and depressive symptoms also operates (R2 = .22). Findings highlight the importance of using EQ as a specific measure of this transdiagnostic process in research and clinical settings.
New records of sea anemones (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Actiniaria) in the Mexican Caribbean

The species Homostichanthus duerdeni and Anemonia sargassensis are recorded for the first time in the Mexican Caribbean. Homostichanthus duerdeni is taxonomically diagnosed, and images from living specimens, including external and internal features and cnidae, are provided. The extension of the geographical distribution range of A. sargassensis is discussed, as well as the taxonomic status of the previous records of actiniarians in the Mexican Caribbean. An updated list of sea anemones in the region is provided, comprising 15 species in 11 localities along the Mexican Caribbean.

The shallow water sea anemone Phymanthus crucifer exhibits three distinct morphotypes, characterized by the presence or absence of protuberances on the marginal tentacles, as well as intermediate forms. The taxonomic status of the different morphotypes and the diagnostic value of protuberances on the tentacles have been debated for this species and the family Phymanthidae. We analysed the external and internal anatomy, cnidae and three mitochondrial molecular markers for representatives of each of the three morphotypes. In addition, we address the putative monophyly of the family Phymanthidae based on molecular data. With the exception of the protuberances, our morphological and molecular results show no differences among the three morphotypes; thus, we consider this feature to be intraspecific variability within P. crucifer. Furthermore, molecular data reveal that the family Phymanthidae is not monophyletic. In addition, we discuss several diagnostic morphological features of the family Phymanthidae.

This paper analyses a process of co-construction of knowledge and its multiple forms of communication in a country of the European periphery in the early twentieth century. It focuses on Lieutenant Manuel Soares de Melo e Simas, a politically engaged Portuguese astronomer, who moved from amateur to professional during the political transition from the monarchy to the republic. Melo e Simas paralleled his professional career in continuous activity of communicating science to the public in the context of republicanism in a double way, by responding to the agenda of republicanism and by playing an active role in shaping it. He aimed at educating lay audiences in the various ways of astronomy, and he reached out to as many people as possible by exploring a multitude of communication channels, from lectures to articles in newspapers and journals. Voiced often within newly created republican institutions, the praxis and the ideas of Melo e Simas helped to mold the new republican scientific ethos. By going beyond mere emphasis on scientism and positivism, usually taken to be the defining characteristics of the new republican ethos, this paper argues that science and the specificities of its multiple forms of communication were central to the way Melo e Simas shaped the republican ideology. Furthermore, popularization of science was used to legitimize the status of professional scientists at the same time that it helped reinforce their institutional setting, still to be negotiated in the forthcoming decades through a complex process which deserves further historical analysis.

The present study documents for the first time the occurrence of amphipods in the Alacranes Reef, Gulf of Mexico. Six macrofouling assemblages were sampled from two types of man-made structures (wood docks and navigation buoys). After sorting the material, 17 species were identified. An annotated checklist for all species is provided, documenting new records for 11 species (Ampithoe marcuzzii, Apolochus cf. delacaya, Audulla chelifera, Cymadusa compta, Leucothoe cf. wuriti, Neomegamphopus hiatus, Parhyale hawaiensis, Podocerus fissipes, Quadrimaera prope pacifica, Stenothoe gallensis and Stenothoe valida).
